At the start of each year, I ask the Lord for a word for the year.
This year the word that came to me initially and then on each occasion of asking is “fulfillment.”
I discern this word “fulfillment ” is from the Lord.
If you asked me to choose a word myself to pray about then “fulfilment” would not have been in the mix.
It is a word now that is in my thoughts.
It is a word that speaks of much that I believe the Lord will show me over this year.
A good place to start with any word is understanding its meaning. Even words we generally know the meaning of can have several deeper meanings.
The Oxford dictionary defines fulfillment as:
- the achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted. e.g a promise, prophecy, hope is fulfilled.
- satisfaction or happiness as a result of fully developing one’s potential. e.g getting married has made me happy and fulfilled.
- the meeting of a requirement, condition, or need. e.g the legal requirements have been fulfilled.
- the performance of a duty or role as required, pledged, or expected.e.g the fulfillment of duties.
There are many scriptures in the bible that speak of fulfillment and with all that is happening in our world, the wars, violence, injustice and unrest then these verses encourage us as followers of Jesus to fulfill God’s love in our actions to others.
“Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”
Romans 13:10 NKJV
Jesus was the perfect fulfillment of the law and the perfect example of sacrificial love.
Do no harm…could we be harming someone through thoughtless words or actions, even thinking it’s no big deal. Sometimes love is not about doing something but to actively stop doing something which is causing my neighbour harm.
Let us fulfill the law of Christ Jesus today by loving our neighbours as ourselves.
