Today’s encounter with Jesus tells the story of the first recorded miracle of Jesus written by JoJo of The Berry Bunch Family Ministry and a presenter on Pure24/7 radio.
It is such fun to share the amazing account of Jesus turning water into wine by using an object lesson of turning water into wine!
On several occasions, at family services and in Children’s Ministry events, I have caught the attention of children and adults alike by taking a jug of water and pouring the water into a wine glass and seeing the excited faces as the water turns red to look like wine.
I know, I can’t really turnwater into wine, it’s not possible for me or you, but of course with God – ‘all things are possible’ (Matthew 19:26) and that’s why when Jesus literally turned water into wine it was indeed a miracle!
A miracle is an extraordinary event which involves divine intervention in human affairs. And our God, through Jesus Christ, not only attended a wedding in Cana in Galilee over 2000 years ago but took such an interest that he saved the marriage couple and their family from embarrassment and shame by making sure the wine did not run out.
We understand that the flow of wine at a wedding in those days was extremely important and signified the mark of a good host which was also deeply significant for the culture of that day and perhaps still is.
Interestingly, there is no mention of a reaction from the married couple or whether they even knew what Jesus had done for them. And the master of the ceremonies who tasted this miraculous wine was clearly impressed with the quality but did not know that Jesus had used water to create this ‘choice wine’ (John 2:9-10).
Jesus was at this wedding with his mother and his disciples. Jesus’ mother first mentioned the problem with the wine running out and had a brief conversation with Jesus about this. Then the servants at the wedding carried out Jesus’ instructions to fill jars up with water, so they would have known what Jesus did and of course the disciples were with Jesus and knew that he had turned water into wine.
This miracle was the first sign through which Jesus revealed his glory. Only God can defy the laws of nature and do the impossible. This first amazing sign not only brought joy to guests at the wedding (whether they knew what happened or not) but more importantly through this miracle the disciples believed in Jesus.
What could be more important than believing in our Lord Jesus – King of Kings and Lord of Lords?
