It’s good to ponder such questions. I’m not thinking today of water which satisfies the physical thirst but our spiritual thirst. Where am I drinking from? Is it a pure source of living water or something else.
God had something to say to the prophet Jeremiah on this very question. God had observed the following about His people.
“But My people have changed their Glory for what does not profit. Be astonished, O heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid; Be very desolate,” says the Lord. “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water”. Jeremiah 2.11-13 NKJV
God states very plainly to Jeremiah that God is the fountain of living waters. Forsaking Him is to our shame and drinking from another source will not satisfy us.
There was someone else who also claimed that He was living water. Jesus. No-one else could make such a claim but God. God had already declared Himself the fountain of living waters to His people. When Jesus stood up at the great festival in front of the Jews in Jerusalem and declared He was the living waters then such a claim would have been blasphemous but it was the truth. Jesus is God. Such a declaration by Jesus was signposting the Jews to that truth. Jesus is the living water. Jesus is God.
So I ponder the same question today. Do I forsake Jesus. His commandments, His teachings, His fellowship for water that does not satisfy? Do I drink from pure water or do I run after other waters that do not truly satisfy my soul. What waters am I drinking from today.
As God said to His people through the prophet Jeremiah.
“And now why take the road to Egypt to the waters of Sihor? Or why take the road to Assyria, to drink the waters of the River? Your own wickedness will correct you, and your backslidings will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing that you have forsaken the Lord your God, and the fear of Me is not in you,”Says the Lord God of hosts.” Jeremiah 2.18-19NKJV
