Shame..I’m sure we’ve all experienced it at some time in our lives. Even the word itself “shame” makes me squirm. It is a word that just sums up exactly the feelings you experience when you are ashamed or someone else shames you. It’s humiliating, awful and you just want to disappear and hide. For all eyes to be somewhere else but not fixed on you..seeing you in all your shame.
In the parable of the prodigal son, we see a Father who covers his son’s shame when he returns home. This Father does not expose his son to ridicule and gloat over his mistakes. He does not parade his son in his rags and dirty clothes. No, this Father puts a ring on his finger and new clothes on his back. He covers his son’s shame. He gives him back his dignity. He restores him to his family. He redeems him from his shame.
Just like the prodigal son, when we are convicted of our wrongdoings and confess our sins then God forgives us and restores us and we are released from our shame. Jesus took our shame on himself through his death on the Cross. He bore our sin and shame. God has not exposed us or dealt with us as our sins demanded but has cleansed us, restored us and dressed us in a new garment of salvation and a robe of righteousness. How merciful, gracious and kind is our Lord to us.
As it is written:“Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense,And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame” Rom.9.33

Hallelujah Nicola! Our Lord and Saviour has conquered our shame. He takes our confessed rags and replaces them with Royal robes!
