Prayer and The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity – The GodHead. God is revealed as Father, Son & Holy Spirit.

Jesus said “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.  Matt 28:19

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” 2 Corinthians 13:14

Fellowship = [Koinonia] which means 7 things: presence, sharing, company enjoyed, co-worker, intimacy, confidentiality, comradeship.

This is the relationship which God wants us to have with the Holy Spirit – It is to our disadvantage when we neglect or take the Holy Spirit for granted particularly in our prayer lives.

1.Who is & what is the role of the Holy Spirit?

In our prayer lives it is important to understand the role of the Holy Spirit and I believe the importance of being baptised in the Holy Spirit and praying in the Spirit.

a)The Holy Spirit is our Helper/Comforter.

John 14:16 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (Parakletos), that he may abide with you forever; “

The Holy Spirit is the friend who is always at your side to help you particularly in times of intercession and prayer.

b) The Holy Spirit is our Teacher.

John 14:26 ”But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

Do you think you have a bad memory? – pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you and remind you of scripture so that you can recall the word of God when needed in prayer.

c)  The Holy Spirit brings conviction of sin.

John 16:8” When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:”

d)  The Holy Spirit guides us into the truth & prophecy

John 16:13 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

e)  The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus & brings revelation of Jesus

John 16:14 “He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.”

John 15:26 “When the Counsellor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me”.

Ephesians 1:17 “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

f) The Holy Spirit helps us to overcome temptation

Galatians 5:16 “So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want”.

g) The Holy Spirit produces fruit in us to be more like Jesus

Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control”

h) The Holy Spirit blesses us with the gifts of the Spirit

A spiritual gift is a special attribute/ability given by the Holy Spirit to every Christian according to God’s grace. The scriptures tell us the various spiritual gifts which God has for the believers in Christ. 1 Corinthians Ch 12, Ephesians Ch 4, Romans Ch 12.

The gifts include: prophecy, service to others, teaching, encouragement, giving, leadership, mercy, wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, discernment, tongues, interpretation of tongues, apostle, evangelist, pastor

The gifts are for every believer in Christ. The scriptures tell us that every Christian has received at least one gift and can have more than one gift.   The gifts are given “to each one individually as He wills” So, if you are a Christian – be confident – the word says you have a spiritual gift so believe that you have one and find it. 1 Peter Ch 4 v 10. It is God’s intention that every Christian should find and exercise their gift. They are not earned, or rewards, you don’t have to be a Christian for so many years etc. before you get one – They are given by God’s grace to those who desire them with a pure heart.

1 Corinthians Ch 12 v 7 says “the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all” The gifts are given to edify others. They are for the glory of God and given so that as Christians we can mature and grow closer in our walk with God.   They should not be confused with natural talents and abilities. They are not given to us so that we can get proud or puffed up – to gloat or to be jealous of anyone’s gift. We must exercise the gifts with pure motives and with love. Paul clearly says this in 1 Corinthians Ch 13 when he talks of love.   The gifts are functional – They are there to equip God’s church.

It is such a help and a blessing to use the spiritual gifts in our private prayer time and when we pray for others – to give words of knowledge, encouragement & prophecy.

I find it helpful to use these scriptural truths about the Holy Spirit and his role to help me in times of prayer: e.g. If am praying for someone who is not saved then I can ask the Holy Spirit to bring conviction of sin, the need for salvation because of judgement and revelation of Jesus as being the only way to be reconciled to God.

If  I am,  or someone I know is struggling with temptation,  then I can pray and ask the Holy Spirit to draw alongside them to help them overcome temptation and for the fruit of self control to be produced in their lives.

If someone is grieving or in pain then for the Holy Spirit to draw alongside them to bring comfort at such times.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth and leads us into all truth.  In times such as these when we can be led into error or deceived by false teachings, may we ask that the Holy Spirit leads us into truth and not error and keeps our feet on the right path.Prayer – Is God hearing my prayers?

Prayer – What’s in a name? Part 1

KNOW YOUR GOD – To be effective in prayer we need to know:

WHO we are praying to;

in WHOSE name we pray;

and the AUTHORITY and POSITION we have in CHRIST :

One of the main purposes of prayer is to develop our relationship with God by actively seeking/pursuing HIS FACE through the person of his son, JESUS CHRIST, with the help of the HOLY SPIRIT who will lead us into further revelation of CHRIST and GOD.

Through our fellowship with God and Christ in prayer and meditation on scripture we start to change (REVIVAL) and become more like JESUS. We then reveal Him to others as our characters change (through the fruit of the HOLY SPIRIT in our lives) and by our witness lead them to salvation in CHRIST.

As we get to know God more intimately we become more conscious of His “still small voice” and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Our prayers will be shaped by our revelation of GOD and we will pray with more effectively with understanding, faith, authority & power.

A             THE START OF DEVELOPING OUR PRAYER LIFE WE NEED TO KNOW WHO WE ARE PRAYING TO:   BEING GOD FOCUSED

“In the beginning GOD”     Genesis 1:1

Jesus’ model prayer in Matthew 6: 9-13 starts “Our FATHER in heaven, Hallowed be Your NAME

Hallowed means – to revere, sanctify, consecrate, set apart, worship, lift up, exalt HIS HOLY NAME

One way to achieve this is by CONFESSION – This is not to be confused with repentance here but means actively:

1              PROCLAIMING WHO GOD IS;

2              ACKNOWLEDGING WHO GOD IS; and

3              CONTEMPLATING WHO GOD IS:

It is a statement of our faith and understanding of GOD’S Character, His Works, His Wonders, His Glory –as are revealed in scripture and through the Jesus his son and the Holy Spirit working in us to draw us into deeper relationship and intimacy with God

It involves confessing (speaking out) belief in God and His promises and His Word.

Studying the names of God is one way to help us to do this more effectively in prayer as each one of God’s names reveal a part of His Character. Names have great significance in the Bible and in the spiritual realm.   A name denotes not only character and identity but authority and power as well.   The Hebrew word for name is “onoma” and was used to signify rank or authority, character and reputation.

These are some of the things which the Bible says about the Name of the Lord:

The Name of the Lord is a defence (Psalm 20:1)

A help in time of trouble (Psalm 9:10)

A comfort (Daniel 11:32)

A strong tower (Proverbs 18:10)

A weapon (1 Samuel 17:45; 2 Chronicles 14:11)

An ointment poured forth (Song of Solomon 1:3)

“In the name of our God We will set up our banners: The Lord fulfil all your petitions “ Psalm 20:5

In Exodus 34 when God descended and revealed himself to Moses v5 “The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there AND PROCLAIMED THE NAME OF THE LORD; And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed. “The Lord, the Lord God merciful and gracious, longsuffering and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and fourth generation

Every name of God in the Bible reveals a characteristic of God but God doesn’t just want us to know His names.  In and through prayer, He wants us to experience true fellowship and communion with Him and find out that He is all the things He says He is:

NAMES OF GOD REVEALED IN SCRIPTURE;

1.“ELOHIM” – GOD THE CREATOR – Genesis 1:1 – GOD is revealed as the creator of heaven and earth who has all authority, power, greatness, dominion and glory in the whole of the universe. Elohim is the plural form because Jesus and the Holy Spirit were there at the beginning with God when the world was created.

In prayerful confession we can acknowledge and thank God that He alone is the creator and sustainer of all things and that He is sovereign God. We can acknowledge His glory and power demonstrated in creation.

2. ”EL – SHADDAI” – GOD ALMIGHTY – Genesis 17:4 & Exodus 6:3 – GOD is revealed as the God who is all-powerful, the God of impossibilities. He is mighty, unconquerable, all-sufficient. Able to do anything and supply all needs.     He is able to keep all His promises to us.

Declare in prayer that God is all-powerful and that you can trust Him and rely on Him in all situations (even when we don’t know what is happening and it’s a painful place!). Confess that nothing is impossible for God and He can fulfil all his promises in His Word.

3. “EL ELYON” – THE MOST HIGH GOD – Genesis 14:18 God is revealed as the Most High – There is no-one above Him. He occupies the highest position and throne.

Declare that God is the only one who is worthy of praise and to be highly exalted. Take a humble attitude towards Him by kneeling in His presence.

4.“JEHOVAH” – Exodus 3 v 13 “ I AM THE I AM.” – God reveals himself to Moses at the burning bush as the I AM. i.e. God is everything and in everything. He reveals himself as a HOLY GOD and tells Moses to take off his shoes because he is standing on holy ground.

Acknowledge that God is everything you need. That God is a Holy God and that He desires a Holy people. When meditating on God’s holiness take time to let God search your heart and reveal any sin which needs to be repented over. Receive God’s forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ.

5.JEHOVAH JIREH – Genesis 22:8-14. God revealed himself to Abraham on Mount Moriah that he is the GOD of PROVISION. God provided a ram for the sacrifice instead of Isaac. Abraham saw the provision of God.   God later provided Jesus as the sacrifice in our place (on the same mountain) so that we could be redeemed.   Jesus tells us to take our needs to the Father and ask for what we need so that God can provide.

Acknowledge God’s provision to us.  Ask God to help us rely on His provision rather than trusting in ourselves. Acknowledge Christ’s sacrifice on the cross which provided the ransom for us so that we are now redeemed and righteous in God’s sight.

6.JEHOVAH ROPHE – Exodus 15:26 – God reveals himself as the GOD WHO HEALS. God is a healer and a restorer– It is His nature.

Acknowledge that God alone brings healing and restoration. Thank God that He is the God who heals physical illness & diseases, emotional hurts, spiritual brokenness. Ask Him to move in specific areas where healing or restoration needs to take place. Read and meditate on Isaiah 53 4/5 & Isaiah 61

7.JEHOVAH NISSI – Exodus 17:15 – God is revealed as “The LORD is my BANNER”. He revealed his protection of Israel by defeating their enemies the Amalekites.  He is also EL GIBBOR –Mighty God (Champion/hero) Isaiah 9: 6,7

Acknowledge and thank God for His protection and the He is victorious in battle. He is undefeated. Acknowledge that the battle belongs to Him and we wage war against our enemy Satan under His banner. Acknowledge Christ’s victory over Satan at the Cross over sin and death when He took the keys of death and hell from Satan and that we are victorious in Him. Christ is our champion. We fight a defeated enemy and final victory will happen.

8.JEHOVAH SHALOM – Judges 6:24 – the Lord is PEACE.

Acknowledge that in God alone perfect peace is found. Thank him for His peace that passes all understanding. Shalom Peace means rest, harmony, wholeness, completeness, health, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquillity, and prosperity i.e. total wellbeing.

9.JEHOVAH TSIDKENU – Jeremiah 23:6 – the LORD our RIGHTEOUSNESS

Acknowledge that God is righteousness and that it is only through the blood of Christ that we are righteousness. Ask for righteousness to be maintained in our lives and that we reject sin in our lives.

10.JEHOVAH SHAMMAH – Ezekiel 48:35 – the LORD is THERE.   God reveals himself as always being there. He is in the past, present and future. He is omnipresent and eternal in nature.

Acknowledge and thank God that he is always there with us. A very present help in time of trouble. We cannot go anywhere as the Psalmist said and not find Him. He is everywhere. He is the Alpha (beginning) and the Omega (end). He is there when we get up and when we go to bed. He is not surprised by anything!! Even when we are.

11.JEHOVAH SABAOTH – 1 Samuel 17:45 – “The LORD of HOSTS”. God is the captain of all the hosts (angelic) of Heaven.

Acknowledge & thank God that angels are sent forth by Him to be ministers to those who will inherit salvation. Ask God to release and send angels into specific situations to help others and us.

12.JEHOVAH – ROI (Ra-ah)– God is revealed as our SHEPHERD – Psalm 23: 1

13.ABBA FATHER – Matthew 6 9-13 – Jesus reveals God as our Father for the first time in scripture. It reveals a new more intimate level of relationship.

14.The whole Bible reveals that God is LOVE (AGAPE)– His Character is LOVE – 1 John 4:8 “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.”

AGAPE means “undefeatable benevolence and unconquerable good will that always seeks the highest good of the other person”. It describes the unconditional love which God has for the world.

Practical Focus:

Practice some prayerful confession and pray through a portion of Psalm 23 which reveals God as our shepherd – JEHOVAH ROI (Ra-ah)

Read PSALM 23: verses 1-4

 Example PRAYER; –

“ Lord, your word says that you are my shepherd. I choose to believe your word and declare in faith that you are my shepherd . Thank you God that you are Jehovah Roi – My Shepherd. I declare that I belong to you and you alone and you are Lord of my life. Thank you God that you are the one true shepherd who tends, cares and provides for me.   Thank you that you make me lie down in green pastures where I can rest and be refreshed in you.   Thank you Lord that you lead me every day. Help me to follow in your footsteps and to be obedient to your voice. Thank you God that you are JEHOVAH JIREH – the God who provides for me and that I shall not want. Lord, your word declares that you will provide all my needs according to your riches in glory. Help me to see Lord that these are not my wants but my needs.

Thank you Lord that you are JEHOVAH TSIDKENU the God of righteousness who leads me in paths of righteousness.   Lord keep me from temptation and sin and keep my feet on the rights paths of your presence. Thank you God for Jesus who your word declares is the good shepherd who by his death on the cross has opened up the way for me to come before your throne. I thank you for the blood of Christ that cleanses me and the robes of righteousness which cover me.

God, help me to share the love of Christ with those who don’t know you so that they can see and know Christ as their Shepherd.   Lord give me compassion for those who don’t know you.

Thank you God for [name people] in this church who you have put in positions to be shepherds of this flock. God bless them and help them to be good shepherds filled with your wisdom as they love us, lead us and care for us.

Lord, help me to feed on good food – building up myself and strengthening myself in you and your Word. Lord, renew my appetite and thirst for you because I know that you are the only one who can satisfy.   You alone are the bread of life.

God finally, I acknowledge that your word says that “Know that the Lord, He is God. It is He who has made us and not we ourselves. We are His People and the Sheep of His pasture”. Lord, let me have a true revelation of who you are so that I will not boast in me but in you alone. That I will walk humbly before you.   In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I encourage you to continue to practice some prayerful confession using the names of God.  Choose one of God’s revealed names and in your own words pray making confessions of that name – it may be that you need more revelation of that aspect of God’s name/ or there is someone you know in a particular situation who needs a revelation of that name. Let the Lord lead you as you pray and be open to what He will reveal to you.

Prayer – Let’s be inspired

We are in a season where God is calling His people to pray and intercede being inspired and empowered by His Holy Spirit.    I am going to post a series of notes which I used some years ago when leading some prayer workshops.  The aim was to encourage believers to pray and help them develop prayer as a lifestyle.  It was also to provide some practical help to people who struggled to pray so that they would be encouraged to start to develop their own prayer life.  You can use the notes on your own or in a group.    I hope they will inspire you to pray for others and yourself.   It’s not about praying by rote or praying long, complicated prayers but about relationship with your Heavenly Father and bringing all things to Him through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Encouragement to Pray:

MEN OUGHT ALWAYS TO PRAY, AND NOT TO FAINT – LUKE 18:1

AND WHEN HE HAD TAKEN THE BOOK, THE FOUR BEASTS AND FOUR AND TWENTY ELDERS FELL DOWN BEFORE THE LAMB, HAVING EVERY ONE OF THEM HARPS, GOLDEN VIALS FULL OF ODOURS WHICH ARE THE PRAYERS OF SAINTS…..AND ANOTHER ANGEL CAME AND STOOD AT THE ALTAR, HAVING A GOLDEN CENSER; AND THERE WAS GIVEN UNTO HIM MUCH INCENSE, THAT HE SHOULD OFFER IT WITH THE PRAYERS OF ALL SAINTS UPON THE GOLDEN ALTAR WHICH WAS BEFORE THE THRONE. AND THE SMOKE OF THE INCENSE, WHICH CAME WITH THE PRAYERS OF THE SAINTS, ASCENDED UP BEFORE GOD OUT OF THE ANGEL’S HAND –REVELATION 5:8 8:3-4

“TRUE PRAYER MUST BE AFLAME. CHRISTIAN LIFE AND CHARACTER NEED TO BE ON FIRE. LACK OF SPIRITUAL HEAT CREATES MORE INFIDELITY THAN LACK OF FAITH – E M BOUNDS”

“THIS IS THE SECRET LIFE OF PRAYER. TAKE TIME IN THE INNER CHAMBER TO BOW DOWN AND WORSHIP; AND WAIT ON HIM TILL HE UNVEILS HIMSELF AND TAKES POSSESSION OF YOU, AND GOES OUT WITH YOU TO SHOW HOW A MAN MAY LIVE AND WALK IN ABIDING FELLOWSHIP WITH AN UNSEEN LORD” –ANDREW MURRAY

NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT TO GOD THAN PRAYER IN DEALING WITH MANKIND. BUT IS IT LIKEWISE ALL IMPORTANT TO MAN TO PRAY. FAILURE TO PRAY IS FAILURE ALONG THE WHOLE LINE OF LIFE. IT IS FAILURE OF DUTY, SERVICE AND SPIRITUAL PROGRESS. GOD MUST HELP MAN BY PRAYER. HE WHO DOES NOT PRAY, THEREFORE ROBS HIMSELF OF GOD’S HELP AND PLACES GOD WHERE HE CANNOT HELP MAN.” E M BOUNDS

Rooting out the enemy

The enemy has a strategy against individuals and fellowships but our God knows all things.   Through prayer, revelation, the power of the Holy Spirit and the authority we have in Christ, we can root out the enemy, expose his strategies and demolish his strongholds.

Some years ago the Lord revealed to us that the enemy was at work in a local fellowship and was hindering the gospel message which was being broadcast into Asia by a radio station associated to that church.    We were loosely involved with the church because one of our ministers was helping the local minister with the church.  He was also a patron of the radio station and broadcast an evangelical message regularly.

We were first made aware by the Holy Spirit that there was a problem when our minister became ill and the Holy Spirit revealed that he was under a spiritual attack.    As we prayed for him, the Lord revealed that the source of the attack was from demonic influences in that church.    The Lord confirmed to us that if we went to the church, He would reveal the source of the attack and the demonic strongholds which needed to be brought down.

We prayed and agreed to visit the church with our minster.   Not all of our group on the first visit but a few so that we did not attract attention and stand out.    The Lord impressed upon us that we must be completely surrendered to Him and walking in His righteousness, authority and truth.   If we were not then the enemy would have advantage of us.

During the evening service, the local minister asked if everyone who was involved with the work of the radio station would stand up.  The Holy Spirit led us to pray for them and the minister felt led to ask us all to leave the church and go to the radio station to pray then and there.    We felt this was the Lord revealing to us that the source of the enemy’s work was in the radio station and this was the leading of the Holy Spirit.     We had a very powerful time of prayer in the radio station.  The Lord confirmed that he had heard and would answer our prayers and things would happen fast.  Strongholds would be broken in His name.

The next week after our prayer time at the radio station, I was met by the minister before the church service who was very agitated and said that “all hell had broken loose since we prayed”.    The local minister had been arrested after the radio station manager claimed that the minister had stabbed him.   We knew that this was an attack of the enemy and was designed to strike fear into our hearts so that we would stop praying.  We also believed that the Lord had exposed the root of the enemies’ stronghold.  The Lord impressed upon us that we should not fear but should trust in Him, press on and we would see the victory.  It was a very serious situation.   We sought the Lord, prayed about everything – especially our fears and anxieties but we declared that we would stand and trust our God.   We particularly prayed for the local minister who was in police custody, for him & his family to have peace and for the truth to be revealed.  During the week that followed, the police discovered CCTV footage which completely exonerated the minister and he was released from police custody.   The radio manager had actually stabbed himself and tried to frame the minister.    The Lord had exposed the lies, the work of the enemy and delivered his servant.  The radio manager was subsequently fired.

The next step for the release of the church and as part of the preparation to pull down the strongholds was through worship.   One of our group, who was anointed in worship, took a few people to lead worship and sing in the church.    During the worship time there were various pictures and a tongue and interpretation which encouraged the congregation to press into God.  The barriers which were stopping them from pressing in were going to be demolished.   Jesus was going to light a fire among them and release them from their chains.

We then took a group to pray around the church building itself on an evening when the building was empty.   Whilst part of the group was out praying, the rest stayed behind to cover them with prayer.    On the way to the church, we just knew that there was an angel in the car with us.  I could clearly see this angel in the spirit seated on the rear seat.   He was armed and ready to assist us as we prayed.    When we arrived we prayed at the front doors of the church and pleaded the blood of Christ all over the building.  The Holy Spirit revealed several demons in the church building.   We could see them in the spirit and took authority and cast them all out.   We saw in the spirit and had a peace that they had departed.   At the next Sunday service the people testified that the atmosphere in the church was different, they had enjoyed the best time of worship and praise and that the heaviness/restrictions that they normally felt had gone.

The last part of our prayer strategy involved going to the radio station building to pray at midnight.   We had a picture of demonic figures in the radio station building itself and that this was the time to go, cast them out and break the strongholds.   Before we went in the physical we spent time in prayer fasting and seeking the Lord and his battle plan.   We made ourselves ready as the Lord directed us.    As part of the preparation the Lord led us to pray over the building in the spirit.    As we prayed we saw ourselves in the building itself, moving up floor by floor and praying and pleading the blood of Christ over the whole of the building sealing it for the Lord.    We bound the enemy and claimed every part of the building and the radio station for the Lord.

We were then ready to go out to the radio station to pray at midnight.   We met and strengthened ourselves in the Lord, prayed and anointed ourselves with oil.   Again, some remained to pray whilst the rest went.   We had felt that it was important that our minister accompanied us for this time of prayer and he agreed to come.   The Lord had told us that we would be accompanied by His angels and that the battle would be fierce but short.  We were to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.   We went in His authority.    The Lord’s instructions were to order all of the demonic powers that were in that place back to hell itself.    We went and did everything as the Lord led us to do and had such a blessed time of prayer.   We knew that the enemy had been cast out and his plans had been brought to nothing.   In the spirit we saw an army of angels encamped all around the building and when we cast the enemy out we saw great hordes of black demonic spirits leave the building.

The fruit of this time of prayer was that the next week the radio station received more responses to the gospel message than they had ever had before.  More people came to know Jesus and gave their lives to Him.  Praise God.   We believe that the enemy had been interfering with the communication of the gospel message through the radio station and that once his influence was removed the gospel message was received loud and clear.    It says in 2 Corinthians 4:4 that the enemy blinds the minds of those who do not believe lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.    We believe that those blinds were removed in prayer and the light of the gospel shone forth.   As Paul says the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.   Be bold in prayer, be led by the Spirit, take up your authority in Christ and believe in faith that the strongholds will come down for the glory of God.

Praying and declaring from a high place

If you feel the call of God and prompting of the Holy Spirit to go up to a high place in your area, city, region or town, wherever it may be,  then I encourage you to do it.  Seek the Lord before going and ask Him to reveal the strategy for your prayers and why He is calling you to this specific place.     We were led by God to pray to Him and declare the Word of God and prophetic words from a high point overlooking our area,  the Clent Hills.    We believe that this was a very strategic place.  A place that had been and was being used by others for purposes which were not of God and were corrupting and influencing our area.   It was a place that we needed to speak out with authority God’s Word and promises over our area for change to happen.

We spent a number of evenings in prayer seeking God before going out on this prayer walk as we believed that God had a specific strategy for how we should pray.   The Holy Spirit led us to a number of scriptures – Isaiah 59 – “When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Lord raises up a Standard against Him” and “Arise, Shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord is shining upon you”.  Isaiah 60.      Isaiah 59 says “So shall they fear; The Name of the Lord from the west; And His glory from the rising of the sun,  When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a Standard against him; The Redeemed will come to Zion and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob says the Lord.   As for Me says the Lord – this is My covenant with them; My Spirit who is upon you, and My Word which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your descendants.”      God gave us instruction to carry a standard with us when we climbed the hill – a red flag with a picture of the Lion of Judah on it.     By carrying the flag we were making a declaration of the truth of this scripture to the enemy.   We had a picture of God’s Holy Angels being released into the area for God’s purposes – a vast army – to battle with the enemy.     Amos 4 v 13 says “For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind, Who declares to man what his thought is , And makes the morning darkness, Who treads the high places of the earth – The Lord of hosts is His Name.   God was releasing His angels to help us – We declared He is the Lord of hosts.  We also believed that we were “lifting up a banner for the peoples” – Isaiah 60 v 10.

Psalm 24 was a key in preparing us for this time of prayer walk.   “Who may ascend the Hill of the Lord?   He who has clean hands and a pure heart and who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully”.      The Lord searches our hearts and any unconfessed sin has to be dealt with.     It was really important for us to take time to ensure that our hearts were right before God before going into prayer warfare such as this for the area.   The heart is deceitful above all things so we allow the Holy Spirit to bring revelation to us and confess it before each other.

The Lord also gave us a word to declare from Amos 4 “Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to your husbands, “Bring us wine, let us drink!”  The Lord God has sworn by His holiness:   “Behold, the days shall come upon you when He will take you away with fishhooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.  You will go out through broken walls, Each one straight ahead of her, And you will be cast into Harmon” says the Lord.

A word also about wicked Rulers Micah v 1-4  – “Hear now, O head of Jacob, and you rulers of the house of Israel:  Is it not for you to know justice? You who hate good and love evil.  Who strip the skin from My people, And the flesh from their bones, And chop them in pieces like meat for the pot, like flesh in the cauldron”.   Then they will cry to the Lord but He will not hear them; He will even hide His face from them at that time, because they have been evil in their deeds.”      Leaders cannot do ill, oppress those underneath them who they should be protecting and expect God to hear them.

In our prayer time there was a tongue and the interpretation.  This was to be an invitation to abundant life and call to repentance.  – Isaiah 55 1-13.  “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money Come buy and eat.  v6  “Seek the Lord while He may be found.  Call upon Him while He is near.  Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts.  Let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God for He will abundantly pardon.”  v12  “For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace; The mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands”.

Also, Hosea 6: 1  “Come let us return to the Lord.  For He has torn us but He will heal us.  He has stricken but He will bind us up.  After two days He will revive us.  On the third day He will raise us up that we may live in His Sight.  Let us know.  Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord.    His going forth is established like the morning.  He will come to us like the rain.  Like the latter and former rain to the earth.”.

We fasted on the day that we were to do the prayer walk.   We felt called to do the prayer walk on a particular date.   On the evening of the prayer walk, we took communion together at the bottom of the hill.   We prayed and spoke from Psalm 121. – God the help of those who seek him.    “I will lift up my eyes to the hills – from whence comes my help?  My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth”.   We then walked up the hill, praying and singing as we went.   We played the song by Robin Marks – “Shout to the North” – “Men of faith rise up and sing, of the great and glorious King.  You are strong when you feel weak, in your brokenness complete.  Shout to the North and the South, Sing to the East and the West, Jesus is Saviour to all, Lord of heaven and earth”.   We felt led to walk in a certain order – I walked first as in a spearhead and then we came two by two with a rear guard as well.    We also brought a Shofar with us to blow from the top of the hill and a compass so that we would know which direction we were facing when declaring the Word.

We waved the flag at the top of the hill as we prayed to the north, south, east & the west and declared all the scriptures which God had previously given us.    We poured water and oil onto the ground as led by the Holy Spirit.   We then asked for the angelic host to be released to do God’s will in our area,  to carry out His orders, to help people and to battle the enemy.   We blew the Shofar and called to the wind to blow, for the wind of God to blow across our area and in that moment the wind completely changed direction.    If we had not been flying the flag, we would probably not have noticed the change in direction and we believe this was a sign from God.  We believe that God had heard our prayer and something had shifted in the spiritual realm.  Praise God.

Before we went to pray, one of our group had wanted to start a fire on the hill but we did not have peace about this particularly as open fires were forbidden.   It did not sit right in our spirits to break the law and so we gave that to God and refused permission for that to be done.    When you go to pray as a group you need unity and to be in agreement.   Sometimes,  the leader will have to exercise Godly wisdom and discernment to avoid anything being done which is not right and take authority in those circumstances.  On the evening, as we stood on the top of the hill and looked in the distance we saw a bonfire burning brightly.   There were no other fires in the area and we believe this was the sign of fire which the person had seen in the spirit.   We didn’t need to start a fire the Lord God would do that.   The Lord is an all-consuming fire – He can burn up the dross and purify.    As Elijah called down fire from heaven we called down the spiritual fire of God on our area.   Let us be on fire for God, burning brightly for Him.  Arise, Shine for your light has come, and the glory of God is shining upon you.

Calling Back

Last week we felt led by the Holy Spirit to cry out and call back from the north, south, east & west in this nation, those who had once walked with the Lord.    Those people who had previously given their lives to the Lord but were no longer serving him.    We prayed for healing, forgiveness and restoration particularly for those who may have been hurt in church life, become ensnared by sin,  who were discouraged, frustrated or had lost their first love.    Those who had lost their way and given up.   Those whose places had been taken by others – that they would be restored.      Jesus wants them back and this is the time for them to take up their place again.    We felt the trumpet was being sounded up and down the nation to draw them back to the battle field and to take up their place in Christ’s army of believers.

There is an old song which says “Sound the battle cry!  See! the foe is nigh; Raise the standard high; for the Lord; Gird your armour on, Stand firm every one; Rest your cause upon His Holy word.   Rouse, then soldiers, rally round the banner!  Ready, Steady, pass the word along; onward, forward, shout aloud Hosanna!  Christ is captain of the mighty throng.”     The cry has gone out for the prodigals to return and we believe the Holy Spirit is drawing them back.  The Word says that great strength will be given to those who turn back the enemy from the gate.   Our enemy Satan wants this nation and at this moment he wants to cause fear and disruption.  We must take up our place, pray and stand against him in faith.    To stand for righteousness and truth.     The battle belongs to the Lord – praise God.

The bible reading which God gave us as we prayed was from Isaiah 49 v 8-12 “Thus says the Lord.  “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.  I will preserve you and give you as a covenant to the people.  To restore the earth, To cause them to inherit the desolate heritages, That you may say to the prisoners, “Go forth” – To those you are in darkness “Show yourselves”.  They shall feed along the roads and their pastures shall be on all desolate heights,  They shall neither hunger nor thirst, Neither heat nor sun shall strike them, for He who has mercy on them will lead them, Even by the springs of water He will guide them, I will make each of My mountains a road, and My highway shall be elevated.  Surely these shall come from afar, Look! Those from the north and the west and these from the land of Sinim”.     Isaiah  55 6 & 7 “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”

God’s Word-The Plumbline

There have been many words recently about deception and being guarded against deception. Jesus himself warns us against being deceived particularly in the time before He returns. We can easily get carried away as “charismatic” believers particularly when we belong to a Spirit filled church and it is so important that the Spirit and the Word are in harmony with the right emphasis on both. The Word of God is our plumb line and any tongue and interpretation, prophecy or teaching that does not line up with the word of God is false.

The apostle Paul teaches us that the enemy has strategies against us and one of his key ones is deception. He loves to lead us astray and cause confusion. Any moves of the Spirit need to be discerned to make sure it is the Holy Spirit and not the wrong spirit at work. It is so important in these times to be rooted in God’s Word and filled with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth.  God’s Word as the belt of truth and our sword is such an essential part of our armour for defence and attack. Every other piece would not fit together or be effective without the belt or sword but how we can rush or just neglect that part of our preparation. It takes discipline to study the bible but I encourage you to do it and to ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in all truth particularly at this time.

I had a picture once of the plumb line. It only takes a tiny bit of deception to lead you away from truth but the more you follow that wrong idea or false teaching the further and further you eventually end up away from the truth. If you draw a line on a piece of paper you will see what I mean. Draw the plumb-line and then draw another line from the bottom at a slight initial angle away from the line and see how far it is away from the plumb line at the end.

The thing with deception is how subtle it is. Be on your guard against it. Deception is so close to the truth that we can readily accept it as the truth because it sounds right but when you hold it up to the Word of God you will see the error.  Satan knows the Word of God too.  He quoted it to Jesus but Jesus knew that he had twisted it’s true purpose and quoted it correctly back.

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to us to help us and He as the Spirit of Truth will lead and guide us into all truth. That is why the Word and the Spirit are so essential to the believer and our walk of faith. Be filled and baptised with the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit for the gift of discernment. When you operate in the gift of discernment you get that sense in your spirit that something is just not right. People refer to gut feelings and it can be like that. I have heard false tongues and just knew in my spirit that it was false and not the Holy Spirit. You hear an interpretation and again it just doesn’t sit right. That is the Holy Spirit helping you to discern the truth. When you talk to other believers they will often have discerned the same. Read and study the bible so that you will have the tools to recognise false teaching or false words.
