In this season of Lent as we have shared posts, prayed and meditated on Scripture it has been the story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness which has caused me to stop and think about Satan’s wickedness in twisting the Word of God.
It is a tactic that the devil still uses to tempt us into sin and disobedience today.
In the first of his temptations, Jesus rebuked the devil by quoting Scripture.
Satan changes tactic and so for the next temptation he quotes Scripture back to Jesus implying that what he is saying to tempt Jesus into disobedience can be justified by Scripture.
We often read that part of the story and miss that point.
Satan turns the Word of God and used it as a temptation to sin.
Satan also knew the Word of God.
Satan still knows the Word of God.
Satan will still use the Word of God in a deceptive and twisted way to cause us to sin and be disobedient to God today.
This is why Jesus warned against false teachers and the Apostles and the early church Fathers continually warned believers to contend for the faith and to be on their guard against those who brought in destructive heresies.
There are still those today who will use the bible in a twisted and deceptive way by taking bible verses out of context and not bringing the full counsel of God’s Word. It is done to manipulate believers to behave in a certain way, to cause them to depart from the Truth and eventually wither in faith.
Let us contend for the Truth and beware of the trap which misquoted and out of context Scripture and false teaching can bring leading us into a trap of subtle temptation.
“Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’
