Who is in your corner?

Towards the end of the book of 2 Samuel there is an account of all the mighty men who served and helped King David and their exploits.

It comes after David’s song of praise to God acknowledging that it was God who raised him up from an insignificant family to be King, whose Holy Spirit was upon him and who was His Rock and Deliverer.

King David didn’t do everything himself though. That was not in God’s plan. He needed people to support him.

King David had wise advisors, people who looked after him, fought for him and loved him. In the best of times but also in the worst of times. They stuck by him.

The names and deeds of these mighty men of David are included at the end of the book of Samuel to remind us that all of us, even mighty anointed Kings, need people around them who are in their corner…supporting, advising, loving, defending, encouraging, reliable and trustworthy people.

It can be easy to overlook those in the supporting roles. To focus on the “main man” but God knows in His wisdom that we all need each other whether family, friends or colleagues to be in our corner.

We all need someone in our corner.

If you are called to be in someone’s corner then praise God let us be loyal and faithful supporters.

Whose corner are you in?

If you are called in a season to be the “main man” then don’t forget you are going to need someone in your corner…you will need their support and wise counsel. They will help keep your feet on the ground so pride does not become a snare but will also allow you to fly when it’s time. Knowing it’s your time to rise and shine without allowing jealousy and bitterness to ruin the moment.

David was a giant killer who attracted other giant killers to join him. We attract who we are, and what we concentrate on we get more of. A team can also do what an individual alone cannot. This all reads like a sermon, but you got me to thinking, Nicola. Thank you!

My women’s group went through this list of Mighty Men for a study. So very good. Normally folks will blow through the Bible when it comes with the list of names, but if you look closely, you can always find more. Like one of his mighty men was Uriah the Hittite, Bathsheba’s husband!

Yes indeed everyone of those names tells a story and that was one sad story the consequences of which led to such tragedy for many in David’s family

Love this. We do tend to focus on the main man and many are clamouring to be the main person. But the one who surrounds and supports someone else is a equally good and important. It is a privilege, joy and responsibility.

Being in someone’s corner is a privilege of Holy service, bringing glory to Father God. In such things He smiles and blesses us. I can’t count off the top of my head the number of those who have been in my corner through Him; there have been many over the years, and there are quite a few today – praise God! May our Father God continue to guide and bless you and your family today dear sister. 🙏
