We read many stories in the bible about angels and the angelic hosts. Angels are spirits and so we don’t see them in the spiritual realm unless our spiritual eyes are opened or in the physical realm unless they reveal themselves to us.
God opened the eyes of Elisha’s servant so that he could see the angelic host which was ready to fight for them as all he could see before that was the enemies’ army which surrounded the city.
And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “ Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6:15-17
God is revealed to us in the story of David’s defeat of the giant, Goliath as JEHOVAH SABAOTH – “The LORD of HOSTS”.
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you”. 1 Samuel 17:45/46
God is the Lord of Hosts. The Lord of the Angel-Armies. God’s angels are mighty and powerful as revealed to us in Scripture. The angelic hosts of Heaven are at God’s and Jesus’ command to do their Will.
When Paul was in the severe storm he encouraged the crew that an Angel of the Lord had stood by him that night and revealed God’s plans.
“And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me.” Acts 27:22-25
When the early church was praying earnestly for Peter who was in prison, the Lord sent an Angel to set him free.
Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were keeping the prison. Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands. Then the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him, “Put on your garment and follow me.” So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.
Our prayer today:
Lord of Hosts, we thank you that even now your angels are still sent from heaven by you to help us, your children, here on earth. Their help may often be unseen or unrecognised by us but we thank you for those times they have ministered to us and will do again in future. Your word tells us that they are ministers to those who will inherit salvation. That is us who are your children through Christ Jesus our Saviour. Lord we ask to you to send your angels to help those in need today wherever they are and whatever circumstances they are in. Open our eyes Lord that just as Elisha’s servant saw the angelic host, we too will see in the Spirit as you reveal things to us by your will. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen 🙏
“Are they (angels) not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation”? Hebrews 1:14
“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.” Hebrews 13:2
